I Tried Peanut Butter and Mayo Because I Saw It on the Internet

Whenever a strange or unique food combination comes across my social media feeds, it’s a sure bet that at some point in the very near future, I’m going to give it a shot.

Unless it involves beef liver or cottage cheese – the only two foods I won’t eat – I’m going to make it, eat it, and most likely post about it myself. Sometimes, I’ll even write an article about it, in case you want to try it, too.

After seeing a peanut-butter-and-mayonnaise sandwich posted on Facebook, however, I’m here to tell you that you’re better off skipping the Skippy and holding off on the Hellman’s, because this sandwich is certainly no miracle (whip).

A few days ago, I saw a friend post about the sandwich combination, saying he grew up on having peanut butter and mayo. Another mutual friend was inspired by his post, made one for herself, and so I now figured I had to try it, too.

After all, sandwiches are kind of my thing, something which evolved not only because I do, in fact, enjoy sandwiches, but because I use a great quote from Warren Zevon to sign off from my radio show each day.

When David Letterman asked Zevon, who was dying of cancer, if he had any learned anything about life and death, he said, just to "enjoy every sandwich.”

I did not enjoy the peanut butter and mayo.

It wasn’t that it was bad; it just wasn’t very good, either.

I slathered some creamy peanut butter on one piece of bread, painted the other with a modicum of mayo (I only use Hellman’s, get outta here with that Cains stuff) and slapped them together.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but the peanut butter profile did not seem to blend well with the tang of the mayo.

Seeing as how I made it through 45 years of life without ever hearing about this sandwich before, I’m guessing it’s not too common of a combo. Have you ever had peanut butter and mayo? Did you like it?
